The Cancer Friendship Tea – By the two sisters, Eileen Schofield and Delmarie Zamparini making a difference…
In 1994, after suffering from cancer for 3 years, our mother passed away. The staff at the Theunis Fichardt Hospice in Polokwane, working under less than ideal conditions due to a lack of adequate funds, offered her, as they do to all their patients, the most wonderful and competent treatment.
We had both attended a number of national Cansa fundraising events over the years including the annual Cuppa for Cansa but felt that we wanted to contribute directly to the Polokwane Hospice. We decided to organize an event called the Cancer Friendship Tea, similarly based on the Cuppa For Cansa, but where we would use our baking skills to raise funds from the ladies of Polokwane for our local Hospice.
The event started off very small with about 30 ladies contributing R600 in the first year. The following year we decided that as the return for our hard work in baking delectable cakes and eats was not rewarding enough we went bigger and managed to collect R4000.The event grew in stature as news spread as to the wonderful quality of the cakes and the funds raised in the next year grew to a high of R18000.
The event was boosted by Tom and Vicky Shearer making The Ranch Resort available for the next tea. These two community minded friends ensured that the resources of their wonderful hotel could be utilized to accommodate more benefactors and in the next 5 years the money raised grew year to year to a new record of R45000 for 2011.The monies raised have enabled us to make a small alteration to the hospice building as well as purchasing fridges, medibeds, linen, cutlery and crockery amongst other things.
This years event, 10th of November, will once again be held at The Ranch Resort’s elegant Basil’s Restaurant with its view over the magnificent gardens and it is expected that a record number of guests will attend.
