Hyena Breeding Project

Rehabilitaion-the-ranch-conservancy

Active in wildlife rehabilitation since the 1960′s when organised conservation was in its infancy, The Ranch Conservancy continually offers shelter to orphaned or injured wildlife which cannot be released into the wild. In September 2001 it provided a safe haven for lions and other Big Five animals from Zimbabwe which were under threat at a time of political and social instability.

The Hyena project is home to 3 Spotted Hyena, namely Skitzo and brothers Slim & Slim as well as a 1 Brown Hyena. They have recently been introduced into larger camps which have been built similarly to how they would live in their natural environment, and they continue to fascinate visitors with their peculiar personalities. We hope to give them an opportunity start a family of their own someday, and that is why it is important to introduce a female and create the most natural environment for them to live in. Viewing and interaction with the lions and hyenas can be arranged by appointment only and bookings can be made by calling the hotel direct.
